What is an Intensive?

An intensive is a focused therapeutic session designed to accelerate progress by working in extended blocks of time—typically 2-3 hours, half-day, or even full-day sessions. Intensives are available after hours and on weekends to accommodate demanding schedules. These sessions utilize evidence-based therapies such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Ego State Therapy, Internal Family Systems and ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention).

How does an Intensive Work?

We begin by identifying a specific area of concern—such as trauma, anxiety, or a particular stressor. During the intensive, we devote uninterrupted time to go in-depth, allowing for more concentrated therapeutic work. This approach often leads to more immediate symptom relief compared to traditional weekly sessions.

Why Choose an Intensive?

Intensives are ideal for individuals seeking rapid relief, including those experiencing acute trauma, high anxiety, or working in high-stress roles (e.g., first responders) who cannot commit to regular weekly sessions. Intensives offer a flexible option for those needing immediate support.

What Does The Research Say?

Research supports the effectiveness of intensive therapy formats, especially for EMDR and ERP. Studies indicate that concentrated sessions can reduce symptoms of trauma, PTSD, and anxiety more rapidly than standard weekly therapy. Intensive EMDR has been shown to provide significant symptom reduction in fewer sessions, while intensive ERP is effective for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

What can an Intensive Help With?

  • Acute trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety and panic disorders
  • OCD (with ERP)
  • Stress-related symptoms
  • Complex grief
  • First responder stress
  • Other issues where rapid symptom relief is desired

Does Insurance Cover This?

Insurance coverage for intensives varies. Some plans may reimburse for extended sessions if medically necessary, but many consider intensives as out-of-pocket services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider for specific information.

Is It Online Or In Person?

While intensives are available both online and in person, in-person sessions are often preferred for their immersive and focused environment. Many clients find that being physically present allows for deeper engagement and more effective processing.
